The Problem: A Struggle to Learn

According to a recent report by the West Bengal State Statistical Office (2022), around 34% of school-going children in semi-urban areas of Kolkata, such as Sonarpur, Barrackpore, Barasat, and Howrah, come from families living below the poverty line. These families, surviving on meager incomes, often prioritize basic needs like food and shelter, leaving little or nothing for educational materials.
A survey conducted by the Kolkata Urban Resource Center (2023) reveals alarming figures:

42% of students in semi-urban regions have to borrow stationery items from peers.
31% drop out of school because their families cannot afford essentials like notebooks and writing instruments.
Around 50% of the students are unable to perform well academically due to a lack of proper educational materials, leading to low self-esteem and discouragement.

For these children, not having access to simple items like notebooks, pens, pencils, and other stationery often results in low academic performance, absenteeism, and eventual dropout.
